Learning to Listen
Effective Communication
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Published by Simon & Schuster
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is arguably the most well known personal development book of all time. This session we explore the back half of the book, focusing on Communicating as a Leader.
The overall theme of this week’s program is Effective Listening. There’s a great deal of emphasis on speaking skills when thinking of strong leaders. Icons may be great speakers, but truly strong leaders are actually better listeners than they are strong speakers.
Exercise Overview
1 Group Discussion (15 minutes) | “True Leader Skills”
A recap of the article, and an engaged discussion on whether speaking or listening skills are more paramount to creating a great leader.
2 Partner Activity (25 minutes) | “Learning to Listen”
True listening (the type of listening where the other person feels they are being heard) is an active task. In this exercise we learn and then practice “Active Listening”.
3 Solo Exercise (5 minutes) | “Life Long Listening”
Listening skills can be applied both at home and the office. In this wrap up exercise, each staff memeber identifies 2 people in their lives that they would like to practice “active listening” with.
Key Deliverables
Staff members completing this workshop will be armed with an arsenal of listening tools; tools they can utilize on a daily basis in creating better relationships at work and at home.
This 45 minute workshop requires no additional materials beyond the standard Pen, Paper, Whiteboard and Markers. This is a stand alone workshop, and no additional followup work is required.
