Tribes

Margaret Mead encouraged us to “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens could change the world.” Seth Godin’s Tribes is about connecting and leading that small group of citizens. A workshop designed to build team unity and purpose.
This workshop is an excellent morale booster. It’s a systematic look at your organization, highlighting the mission and the elements that connect those involved.
Exercise Overview
1 Lecture (10 minutes) | “The 21st Century Tribe”
A recap of the article, and discussion on what it means to be a part of a ‘tribe’ in a digital world; a world overrun by ‘Free’.
2 Group Activity (20 minutes) | “The Tribe & The Mission”
Collectively working to define the intentions, attributes, passions and image that make up your tribe. The purpose is to develop a unified identity of what fits (and what doesn’t) in your tribe.
3 Solo Exercise (5 minutes) | “Your Role”
Tribes have a small group of leaders and a large group of followers. Where do you fit into the equation? Could you play more of a leadership role?
4 Discussion (10 minutes) | “Connect”
What type of people would you like to include in your tribe, if you were to grow? What would be the best way to connect with them?
5 Discussion (10 minutes) | “Empower”
As a tribe grows, there is a risk of the core message – that which attracted certain people in the first place – getting watered down. This is a discussion on what elements need to be retained as you grow, and how people can help spread the word.
