Self Management

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Published by Simon & Schuster

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is arguably the most well known personal development book of all time.  This session we explore the first three habits, focusing on the theme of “personal mastery”.

The overall objective of this week’s program is Self Management; the idea that time management is great, but that you need to know your larger scale objectives in order to schedule and manage your commitments – effectively, and in support of your principles and values.

Exercise Overview

1 Lecture Based (20 minutes)  |   “The First 2 Habits”

An overview and discussion on Covey’s first two habits; “Be Proactive” and “Begin with the End in Mind”.  A focus on building awareness that we all have control over (at the very least) our reactions to everything that happens in our lives.

2 Group Discussion (15 minutes)  |  “Collective Objectives”

Drawing from the article “funeral exercise”, we look at the unique desires of the group members, and identify how they are supported and supportive of the team objectives.

3 Lecture Based (10 minutes)  |  “The 3rd Habit”

Looking at Covey’s 3rd Habit – “Put First Things First” – and what it means in regards to our time management and prioritization.

4 Wrap Up Discussion (10 minutes)  |  “Marrying Purpose”

Now that we have a clearer understanding of our personal priorities, and that of the organization, can we identify which elements of our work support both?  Can we spend more time on those activities?

Key Deliverables

Staff members completing this workshop will be more deliberate in their actions, and learn to accept more responsibility for their actions (and lack of action).

This 55 minute workshop requires no additional materials beyond the standard Pen, Paper, Whiteboard and Markers.  This is a stand alone workshop, and no additional followup work is required.  However, your team is encouraged to complete the “Funeral Exercise” from the article, prior to attending the workshop.
